2006 Nominees for the Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year Awards

Gracious, Incisive, Confident, Passionate, Supportive, A Leader.
My passion in life is to help others achieve their success. My family sustains me. My vision for this community is of a place where there is reasonably happy people peacefully sharing life with one another. There is employment without unreasonable bureaucracy attached. A business climate that supports growth and sustainability. There is a wonderful cultural richness that affords opportunities or learning, for entertainment, for enjoyment.
I bring balance to my life first of all by living my whole life as one unit, not dividing it into work versus play. I keep my work and volunteers hours at a maximum of 40 to 50 per week. I have scheduled family time each week, and lots of unscheduled family time. I have scheduled time with friends every day to chat or to spend time "doing" something, whether it's golf, skiing, walking or getting them involved in volunteer projects. I spend time alone with God everyday, just talking and listening to His words.

Margaret Clifton
Caring, Generous, Energetic, Dedicated, Humorous, Culturally Sensitive.
Curiosity leads me to try new things, learn new skills; engage in conversation with new people. Passion is what leads me to be involved: whether that be cooking a meal, picking up litter, taking minutes, or training for a marathon. Organization is what allows me to maintain balance among the many passions in my life.
I am passionate about my community and my family. Family is inseparable from community. We do not live in isolation; we are part of it. As such, it is up to me to help create the community I want – a community that is safe, clean attractive, and welcoming to diverse people, a community abundant in health, employment opportunities and creative expression.
My children were raised in the community of Mission, in formal organizations and education, these along with my friends helped shape them into the responsible, hard-working, caring adults they are. We certainly wouldn't have made it without a lot of curiosity, passion, love, forgiveness and organization.

Approachable, Passionate, Dynamic, Tender-hearted, Involved, A visionary.
Community – If everyone gave all that they could, and took only what they needed, there would be an abundance of everything. I learned that individuals, particularly when they work together, could actually make a big difference.
Family – It is so much easier to ask for help when you know that the person you're asking is just as comfortable asking you when they need help.
Employment – If you work hard, your efforts will be rewarded, and eventually you will have the opportunity to work at something that you really love.
Personal Development – I never shy away from asking people for advice. I don't always act on it, but I do find it useful to get different perspectives.
Balance – The instructions that airlines give to "put on your own oxygen mask first" is a metaphor for living in a way that allows you to feel your best, give your best, and be your best.

Passionate, Dedicated, Committed, Respectful, Hardworking, Perfectionist.
Each person in a community is autonomous and contributes in the same way that each instrument in a symphony orchestra plays its own part. But there is also the score, the community. When each instrument plays together harmoniously to give expression to the score, then we have music – beautiful music. Otherwise, it is just noise.
My family is the cornerstone off my life. We support each other, depend on each other, respect each other, and celebrate each other. My multi-generation family is the greatest gift and source of joy in my life.
Personal development is hard work and I believe you need to be patient because often it takes a long time for a dream to become reality. By believing that you know your true wants, needs, and desires empowers you to take charge of your own destiny and achieve equilibrium in your life. I now make time for myself – I workout on a regular basis, I garden and read for pleasure, I relax and take the time to appreciate the beauty and simple pleasures of life.

Creative, Determined, Vibrant, Compassionate, Generous, Insightful.
When I moved to Abbotsford in 1998 I had no friends or family in the area, so community was my family – extended family. And like with my real family I try to be supportive. As a student I loved art shows, it was the only entertainment I could afford and a great way to meet people. That's how I met my husband and when people tell me they are new in town I invite them to visit our art shows.
As with community, I love, encourage and support my family. We all support each other in the ways we do best. I feel my friends are family, we are all connected, we are all human.
Employment should be something you enjoy. Work should be an environment of open minds, understanding, a willingness to learn new ways and approval for a job well done. Employees should feel a part of the whole, and be empowered with responsibility they can accomplish.
Be positive and find humour in the negative, don't invite trouble where it isn't, if you don't look for trouble it won't look for you.

Professional, Energetic, Dedicated, Focused, Empathetic, A Leader
Life is a gift from God, which offers endless possibilities for fulfillment. We all have talents and gifts, some we are able to share with others.
Sometimes the new and unknown requires courage to experience it, sometimes the risk seems overwhelming and we choose not take that route, never knowing where it might have lead. I have embraced change when I felt it was for the greater good – for my family, or the community, my church and indeed for my profession.
In my interactions with others, be it personal or professional, I strive to be kind, considerate, compassionate, encouraging and respectful. I strive to be environmentally sensitive; I support advocacy groups who work at lobbying governments for habitat protection and lowering greenhouse gas emissions etc. The variety of contacts through my membership in organizations and my Funky Flex exercise classes three times a week helps me maintain health and balance in my life.

Industrious, Compassionate, Patient, Reliable, Joyful, Nurturing.
My vision on community is based on the concept of 'giving of oneself for the betterment of all.' It has been part of the fabric of my life since childhood. It is also based on the idea that everyone can make a difference; it just takes a bit of courage and perseverance. Each step that is taken by someone, be it big or small, adds to the overall effort to solidify the community's foundation and contribute to the health of it.
It wasn't until I became a mother, and was responsible for another human's welfare that I really understood "It takes a community to raise a child." We must take care of ourselves, our families, and all other living things, if we hope to successfully navigate through life, and have those successes continue into the next generations.
I have an insatiable curiosity about life and have been fortunate to have the option, most of my working life, to choose my path of employment. I was able to explore different careers, risky; as it was at times I followed my heart.
