Bursary Awards
|
In keeping with one of our purposes as a BPW club, to encourage women and girls to
continue their education, the BPW of Abbotsford and BPW Mission donate two $1000 bursaries to
girls graduating from high school- one bursary winner is from a school in Abbotsford and
the other from a school in Mission. The nominees must be graduating in the current year,
planning on pursuing a career in the professions or in business and the course they propose
to take must be a minimum of two years in length. Community involvement and volunteerism is
an important consideration in our selection.
To facilitate the awarding of these bursaries, we work in conjunction with the Abbotsford
Foundation and the Mission Foundation. The Mission Foundation presents us with a shortlist
of applicants from which we choose the winner. The Abbotsford Foundation has an entire
evening set aside, when the bursary committee (up to eight of our members) considers all the
applicants from all of the schools in Abbotsford and we make our choice that evening as a
committee.
These young women are honoured twice: once at their school's graduation ceremonies in spring
and also at our Women of the Year Awards Banquet in May. At this BPW event, the winning recipients
are also involved in our fundraising with the selling of 50/50 tickets.
